Decisions, Decisions, Decisions
Now that you have made the decision to stay on Walt Disney World property, there is still more work to bpolynesian resort photoe done. You’ll have to choose which Walt Disney World resort is best suited to your family’s vacation plans. Each Walt Disney World resort has its own unique theme that runs throughout the property, offering varying experiences for every taste and budget. While each category of resort offers a different level of amenities, the hospitality at each and every resort, from value to deluxe, is Disney all the way.

Each resort also offers different forms of transportation. If you have smaller children, you will want to consider which form (or forms) of transportation will work for your family. This may seem trivial now, but after a week (or more) of packing and unpacking your stroller with all of your gear to board a motor coach, you may not find it so trivial.

This is where the location of the resorts in relation to the parks really comes into play. You may want to consider choosing a resort that is relatively close to the park or parks that you will be frequenting. While you can certainly get to any of the parks from any of the resorts with relative ease, the time it takes to get from one place to another plays a big factor if you want to pop back to your room for a quick break or cat nap before the evening’s activities begin. The spectacularly themed resorts of WDW are like no others in the world. They will whisk you to faraway lands or transport you back to a time long since forgotten. The amazing attention to detail à la Disney can be experienced through amazing architectural design, incredible landscaping, striking decor, and more, all of course in keeping with each resort’s unique theme. The amenities and guest services offered through the resort are equally impressive. From the moment you check in to the moment you depart, you are completely immersed in the magic that is Disney.

The Categories of Walt Disney World Resorts (Disney’s Official Categories) Disney offers a wide selection of resort choices for every taste and budget, each with its own distinctive Disney flair, and all with the world-renowned Disney hospitality and guest service. The resorts are divided into 4 categories, each offering a different level of amenities and services.

The Value resorts are the most budget-conscious of all the WDW resorts. While the bells and whistles may be fewer and farther between, the atmosphere and service is still Disney all the way.

The Moderate resorts include a few more extras than the Value-category resorts while still keeping the cost reasonable. At these resorts, there are additional room amenities, more dining options, including sit-down restaurants, and additional recreational activities.

Disney Vacation Club Resorts offer a home-awayfrom- home feel. They offer some of the most family-friendly amenities in the entire resort, with some including kitchenettes or full kitchens, in-room or additional laundry facilities throughout the resort, larger rooms, increased dining options, additional guest services, and a wide variety of recreational activities. Keep in mind that as the amenities and services increase, so do the prices.

The Deluxe resorts provide guests with the best of what Disney has to offer. Additional room choices, fine dining, concierge services, and club-level rooms are just the beginning.

The Value Resorts
$-$$
Four resorts fall in the Value category: the 3 All-Star Resorts--Disney’s All-Star Music Resort, Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort, and Disney’s All-Star Movie Resort--and the newest addition to the WDW family of resorts, Disney’s Pop Century Resort.

The Moderate Resorts

Four resorts are included in the Moderate category: Disney’s Caribbean Resort, Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort, Disney’s Port Orleans Resort Riverside, and Disney’s Port Orleans Resort French Quarter.

The Disney Vacation Club Resorts(a.k.a. Disney's Deluxe Villa Resorts)
$$$-$$$$
The resorts classified in the Disney Vacation Club category include The Villas at Disney's Wilderness Lodge, The Villas at Disney's Animal Kingdom, Disney’s Old Key West Resort, Disney’s Beach Club Villas, Disney’s Boardwalk Villas, and Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort and Spa.
Look for additional Vacation Club Resorts to open soon.

The Deluxe Resorts
$$$-$$$$
The 10 resorts that fall under the Deluxe category include Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, Disney’s Contemporary Resort, Disney’s Boardwalk Inn, Disney’s Yacht Club Resort, Disney’s Beach Club Resort, Disney’s Polynesian Resort, Disney’s Animal Kingdommayan pic Lodge, Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa, and the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin.

You may notice as you read through the following pages that not all of the Walt Disney World resorts have been listed. While each and every resort is most certainly familyfriendly in its own way - some catering more to those with younger children, others catering more to those with older ones--I have simply chosen a select few that would most likely be appropriate for any family. If you find that a resort isn’t listed in full, don’t by any means cross it off of your list; simply go to www.travelinsightsgroup.com, www.disneyworld.com, or www.allearsnet.com for more details.

I have included a Disney Resorts in Brief chart at the end of this page that’s filled with pertinent information for each and every Walt Disney World resort.

In Brief
The All-Star resorts will immerse you in the theme of your choice, be it movies, music, or sports, done the only way Disney can - larger than life. You will find yourself surrounded by towering Disney characters, oversized musical instruments, and gigantic sporting equipment everywhere you turn. You may actually need to consider whether you can stand the Disney overload that some guests feel when they stay at these resorts.

While these resorts are among the most budget-minded that Disney has to offer, and while the frills are at a minimum, they still provide the level of hospitality and whimsical ambience expected of any Disney resort.

Bright colors and colorful characters are everywhere you turn. For the budget-conscious however, while frills are at a minimum, the atmosphere is still pure Disney. These resorts are a great choice if your budget is limited and your family is small. If you have more than 2 kids, however, you will probably want to consider a resort with larger rooms unless you are luckily enough to be able to book one of the All-Star family suites (however there are only a limited number of them available).

All 3 All-Star Resorts are located nearest to Disney’s Animal Kingdom. While they are built adjacent to each other, they do not share facilities as some of the other Disney resorts do.

Disney’s All-Star Movies Resort
all atar resort photoThe Love Bug, Toy Story, 101 Dalmatians, Fantasia, and The Mighty Ducks live on in a big way (and I mean big) at the All-Star Movies Resort. Don’t be surprised to find yourself standing next to a gigantic Buzz Lightyear, Woody, or one of those spotted Dalmatians. Sorcerer Mickey is large and in charge at the main pool themed to Fantasia, with a wading pool located right nearby for the smaller apprentices in the family. If The Mighty Ducks is a family favorite, the hockey rink-themed pool is sure to score big.

Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort
The themes of surfing, basketball, baseball, football, and tennis would explain the stupendous surfboards, gigantic hoops, and oversized sports equipment that can be found throughout this resort. You can make a splash in the ocean-themed pool, surrounded by shark fins and surfboards, or enjoy America’s favorite pastime at the baseball diamond pool, which is sure to be a hit.

Disney’s All-Star Music Resort
The musically themed buildings are adorned with oversized instruments from gigantic maracas to an enormous drum set. You can’t miss the tremendous jukebox and electric guitars, but they are nothing compared to the cowboy boots, the biggest I have ever seen.
The pools - shaped like a grand piano and a guitar - don’t miss a beat.

* New at Disney’s All-Star Music Resort…
Family Suites have come to Disney’s All-Star Resorts making the resorts an even better option for
families than before. Disney only recently unveiled the all new Family Suites and from theallstar pic moment they were made available they’re been a huge hit. While standard rooms at Disney’s All-Star resorts are among the smallest rooms in all of Walt Disney World, budget-conscious families now have the option of booking a family-size suite that includes an array of extra pluses – not to mention plenty of extra space.

Disney’s All-Star Family Suites Include:
-a generously sized kitchenette
-2 full sized baths
-a microwave
-a coffee maker
-a refrigerator
-a 27” flat screen TV in the master bedroom
- a lounge chair
-privacy drapes in each vanity area
-a master bedroom that’s separate from the main living area
-sleeps up to 6
Rates run approximately $204 per night based on the season

Because the most notable differences between the 3 All-Star resorts are the distinctively different themes, information that pertains to all three resorts is listed only once.

The Highlights
-value pricing with all the perks of staying at a Walt Disney World resort -new suite sized rooms that are roomy enough to accommodate families

-casual surroundings, the majority of which features child-friendly themes and decor In-Room Amenities Between the 3 All-Star Resorts there are 5,760 guest rooms, esuite picach approximately 260 square feet (the smallest among all of the Disney resort rooms). Each room will accommodate up to 4 guests, plus an infant under 3 sleeping in a portable crib. The quarters can be rather tight if your family numbers more than 4. Plan on being extremely organized and storing your luggage creatively, or you may find yourself constantly tripping over your suitcases and souvenirs.

The rooms include the usual hotel furnishings such as the type of bed that you have chosen, as well as a TV, nightstand, dresser, small table and chairs, and a small closet area. There is an in-room safe for your valuables, and the phone has voice mail and a data port. Small refrigerators are available upon request for a fee of approximately $10 per night while portable cribs and hair dryers are available upon request at no charge.
suite pic
The bathrooms at the value resorts are notoriously small, and the All-Star bathrooms are no exception. One plus, however, is that the vanity and sink are located outside of the bathroom, making for less competition to get into the bathroom itself. The overall decor, while bright and cheerful, is generally quite plain. The biggest draw here of course is the price tag. Given that you will enjoy the same overall benefits as those residing in the most expensive resorts on property (keeping in mind that the resorts amenities are considerably fewer and farther between by comparison), the value resorts for your dollar are really quite a good deal.

Guest Services
While the bells and whistles are few and far between at the All-Star Resorts, you will still be able to enjoy basic services such as the ability to purchase park tickets right in the resort lobby, make advance dining arrangements throughout the rest of the WDW Resort, shop at the small gift shops, or get a bite to eat at the food court areas.

-Magical Express service and Airline check-in (select airlines only)

- Bell services are available for help with your luggage, whether it is storage or just help with getting it to your room

-Concierge services including the ability to purchase park tickets or make dining arrangements (a great way to avoid lines at the park gates).

-Park maps, transportation maps, and other guides to the Walt Disney World Resort (all of which provide you with essential information are available) are available at the resort

-Laundry facilities, which are centrally located, are also available at all 3 resorts. If you prefer not to do laundry on your vacation, valet laundry service is also available.

-High Speed Internet service (for a fee)

-ATM(s)

Child Care & Children’s Programs
Child care is not available on-site at Disney’s All-Star Resorts, but you are welcome to make reservations for your kids to stay at any one of the kids clubs located at select resorts throughout Walt Disney World – or make arrangements for in-room child care through Kid’s Night Out (see “Child Care” listed in the Benefits of Staying with the Mouse for all the details).

Recreation
Each All-Star Resort has 2 themed pools along with a toddler pool for splashing around.
All 3 pools are heated, so swimming in the evening is a great option if you want to avoid the hot Florida sun. Towels are also available right at the pool for your convenience.
Each offers a small arcade filled with video games for the kids (or kids at heart), along with a small playground for kids with any excess energy to expend after hitting the parks.
You will also have access to the many recreational facilities located throughout the entire WDW resort. For additional information on Disney’s recreational facilities, click on Walt Disney World Recreation.

Dining
Each of the 3 resorts offers similar dining options, the only big difference being their very different and distinctive themes. Dining choices here include a large food court area or the pool bar. The food courts each provide 6 different counters with a variety of items from pizza and pasta to sandwiches and salads. You can also find burgers, chicken, ribs, and family-style meals. Gourmet it may not be, but this can be a lifesaver with kids. No one ever seems to want the same type of food - especially kids. This way, every member of the family can pick out just what they want, and all in the same location. There is definitely something for everybody. It can get to be quite crowded and fairly noisy at the usual mealtimes, so you may want to eat at “off” times if that works into your schedule. There is limited room service available, offering pizza, salads, and even beer and wine, delivered right to your door. The pool bars offer a variety of drinks and snack foods throughout the day if you would rather just nibble or stay near the pool.

Shops
The resorts also have a small store that offers various items including a very limited selection of groceries and sundries but of course plenty of Disney merchandise.

Transportation
The busses will get you from here to there when you are a guest of the All-Star Resorts.
On a positive note, they have their own separate bus so you won’t find yourself having to stop multiple times before reaching your resort after a long day at the parks. Due to the sheer number of guests that stay here, this helps to makes them a tad timelier than their counterparts throughout the rest of the WDW Resort. You can catch the busses at Cinema Hall, Melody Hall, and Stadium Hall.

In Brief
Disney’s BoardWalk Inn and BoardWalk Villas take you back in time to the turn of the twentieth century, transporting you to the grand seaside resorts of the Mid-Atlantic. The charm and excitement of Atlantic City’s boardwalk and New York’s Coney Island can be felt as you walk past the unique shops and fabulous restaurants that line the boardwalk.

Disney’s BoardWalk Inn and Disney’s BoardWalk Villas are completely separate resorts, each offering its own unique amenities, while still sharing dining, entertainment, and recreational facilities. The Inn is like a hotel, with essentially standard hotel-style rooms.
The Villas, however, offers larger rooms and multiroom options that will accommodate a large family or even 2 families traveling together. The in-room amenities are also more extensive at the Villas as you can see below.

Casual elegance surrounds you immediately upon entering the resort’s magnificent lobby, with its vaulted ceiling and eclectic mix of striped and floral decor. The lobby is shared by both resorts The miniature replica of an original wooden Coney Island roller coaster, the scattering of old seaside photographs, and the hand-painted antique carousel chairs evoke thoughts of the breezy seaside resorts of days gone by.

Along the waterfront of Crescent Lake, on either side of the lobby’s grand veranda and courtyard, you will find an array of shops, restaurants, and clubs. In the evenings, the waterfront springs to life with street performers, food vendors, and midway games, reminiscent of the hustle and bustle of the Atlantic City boardwalk in its heyday.

Disney’s BoardWalk Inn and BoardWalk Villas conjure up thoughts of a bygone era. Strolling along the boardwalks, or relaxing on the veranda, you feel as if you have been transported to the seaside boardwalks of yesteryear. With its array of recreational activities, assortment of dining options, and entertainment, not to mention the variety of accommodations, this is one of the better choices when you’re traveling with kids.

The Highlights
-Extensive recreational facilities

-Boardwalk –style entertainment in the evenings

-Numerous eateries and restaurants are available right onsite

-There are a variety of room styles to choose from which can accommodate families of any and every size

-A location that’s within close proximity to Epcot, MGM, as well as the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin and the Beach and Yacht Club resorts (adding to the already numerous dining options available within a short walk)

In Room Amenities
The rooms at the both the Inn and the Villas are decorated with a beach house casual decor of pastel hues, with striped and floral fabrics throughout. They are spacious enough to allow families to spread out and relax. Quieter rooms can be found the farthest away from the pool or boardwalk area however if you prefer to be in the middle of it all, the rooms located directly on the boardwalk offer a pretty good view of the Epcot fireworks and all of the activity located below.

The BoardWalk Inn (considered the “hotel” side of the resort).
In-Room Amenities
The 372 guest rooms are decorated with a casual beach-house atmosphere. They comfortably sleep up to 5 people in addition to a child under the age of 3 in a crib. At 385 square feet (on average), the rooms offer a reasonable amount of living space for families with 2 or 3 children, though a bit of organizing may be in order if you have any amount of luggage with you.

Each of the guest rooms includes either 2 queen beds or one king bed, a TV, a table and chairs, along with a dresser, a mini bar, refrigerator, coffee maker, and an in-wall safe.

The telephone has voice mail and a data port, and you will also find a hair dryer, iron, and ironing board in the room. High speed internet access is available for a fee.

The bathrooms are on the small side, making bath time a bit of a challenge for the adults giving them to small children. The vanity area, which includes 2 sinks, is at least located outside the bathroom.

While the refrigerators are small they can be a lifesaver with children. It costs less to have the refrigerator and stock it with milk or larger bottles of soda pop than to buy drinks out of the machines or at the resort store every time someone gets thirsty.

Portable cribs are also available upon request and at no charge to you. These are limited in quantity, so make your request far ahead of time. Verify that the request is noted when you call to verify your reservations (which I highly suggest) a few weeks before your trip.
It certainly beats having to drag a crib along with everything else you will be lugging.

Select rooms offer daybeds and a private porch or balcony, but these rooms are limited, so make your requests early.
Club-level rooms have an additional TV and armoire, and the rooms with queen beds have a queen-size sleeper sofa (which is not available in a room with a king bed).

Concierge services at the Innkeepers Club include personalized front desk and guest services as well as a turn-down service. The lounge offers a continental breakfast, midday snack, evening wine and cheese, as well as cordials and dessert.

So You Know
Club-level rooms are available only at select WDW resorts. The added services and advantages can be either a great benefit or just a huge added expense depending on if you are able to take advantage of what is offered. If you are not able to enjoy any of the breakfasts or snacks, and you don’t need (or even want) the additional personalized services, then don’t bother. If, on the other hand, you can take advantage of the offerings, and you prefer a more personalized touch, you may want to consider this type of room.

The BoardWalk Villas
The 520 villas at Disney’s Boardwalk Villas are nicely decorated to reflect a casual beach-house atmosphere. The rooms at Disney’s BoardWalk Villas can comfortably sleep anywhere from 4 to 12 people, along with a child under the age of 3 in a crib, depending on which villa you choose. There are 4 room options at the Villas to fit your family’s needs.

The Studio
At 359 square feet, the studio can accommodate up to 4 guests and a child under the age of 3 in a crib. The room includes a queen bed and a full-size sleeper sofa, as well as a kitchenette (which includes a microwave, coffeemaker, small sink, and a small refrigerator). It is also stocked with cups, plates, and utensils for your convenience.
You will find a hair dryer in the bathroom, so you can leave yours at home.
There is even a vacuum in case you feel the need to do a quick pick-up.
A private porch or balcony comes standard as well. This can be a nice place to sit, relax, and enjoy your surroundings, if you ever get that chance.

The 1-Bedroom Villa
The 1-bedroom villa, at 712 square feet in size, is quite comfortable for up to 4 guests and a child under 3 in a crib. This villa includes a separate living area and a separate master suite with plenty of space to spread out. This type of room is great for families because different members of the family can relax in separate areas if they wish, watch completely different TV shows, or just allow a younger member of the family to take a nap or go to bed earlier than the older kids in a separate, quiet room.

The 1-bedroom villas includes a full-size, fully equipped kitchen stocked with glasses, dishes, and utensils, an in-room washer and dryer (small), a queen sleeper sofa in the living room area, a TV in each room, VCR in the living room, a private balcony or porch, and a master bedroom with a king bed, private bathroom with a whirlpool tub, and a hair dryer.

The 2-Bedroom Villa
The 2-Bedroom at 1072 square feet, is more than comfortable for up to 8 guests and a child under 3 in a crib. It includes all of the amenities of the 1-bedroom villa and also includes a second bedroom. The second bedroom has a queen bed, double sleeper sofa, and its own private bathroom (with a hair dryer).

The Grand Villa
At 2,142 square feet, and with a total of 3 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, The Grand Villa is larger than my first house. It more than comfortably accommodates up to 12 guests and a child under the age of 3 in a crib. Truly a home away from home, this villa is extremely spacious, and a great option if you are traveling with your extended family or friends.

This villa includes all of the amenities found in the 2-bedroom villa, but it also includes a separate dining area and a full-size washer and dryer. The master suite has a king bed, private bathroom with a whirlpool tub, and a hair dryer. The other 2 bedrooms are located on the second level, each with 2 queen beds, private bathrooms (with hair dryers), and a private porch or balcony.

As the villas increase in size, so does the price tag however if your budget allows, the BoardWalk villas are truly a family-friendly find.

So You Know: Corridors are interior to the building for both the Inn and the Villas.

Guest Services (available at both resorts as they share facilities)
-Magical Express services and Airline Check-In (for select airlines only)

-Free self-parking is available, and valet parking is available for a small daily fee,
currently around $7.

-High Speed Internet access (fee)

-Atm(s)

-Central laundry facilities are available at the Inn, while the Villas have washers and dryers located right in the rooms. Valet service is available for those who prefer not to do laundry.

-Bell services are available to help with your luggage, including storage. They will also be happy to arrange for transportation. Storing your luggage may not seem important now, but if you arrive prior to the appointed check in time of 3:00 p.m. at the Inn or 4:00 p.m. at the Villas, it will become very clear just how important this is. The same is true at check-out. If your travel plans don’t have you departing at or before the 11:00 a.m. check-out hour or you want to get in that last-minute ride, unless you will be carrying your luggage around with you, this will be most helpful.

-there is a Guest services desk where you can purchase theme park tickets (allowing you to avoid the long lines at the parks) and make advanced dining reservations, pick up maps, or request information regarding your Disney vacation plans.

-Refillable mugs are available at Seashore Sweets or the Leaping Horse Libations pool bar. (See “Benefits of Staying at the Walt Disney World Resort” for more details.)

- Concierge service (not to be confused with the lobby concierge available at all resorts) is offered only at the Inn. The Innkeepers Club offers a continental breakfast, midday snacks, evening wine and cheese along with cordials and desserts for concierge-level guests. Also available are personalized front desk and guest services, as well as turndown service.

Child Care & Children’s Programs:
There is no child-care facility located right at this resort however The Sandcastle Club, the nearest supervised child-care program, is located just across the way at Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resort. All Walt Disney World resort guests are welcome to take advantage of any child-care program offered throughout the Walt Disney World resort.

Just click on “child care” in the benefits of staying with the mouse for more detailed information regarding the various programs offered. In-room care can be arranged through Kid’s Night Out (again details can be found in the benefits of staying with the mouse)

Recreation
Themed to a boardwalk midway, Luna Park is where you can find the resort’s main pool, featuring the Keister Coaster, a 200-foot water slide created to resemble a wooden roller coaster. A wading pool for those not yet ready to ride the rails is located just beside the main pool. A herd of playful elephants can be found spraying any and all who get caught near their trunks. Located close by is the Leaping Horse Libations, a carousel-themed pool bar offering a variety of refreshments and snacks. There are 2 quiet pools as well if you are seeking a more relaxing pool experience. If you have children in tow, you are better off at the main pool.

The Luna Park Crazy House is a small playground area located right near the main pool. This is a great area for smaller kids whose attention span may not keep them simply hanging around the pool for long, or who just need a break from the sun and water. It also allows parents to split up if you have older kids who just can’t stop sliding down that Keister Coaster, but you don’t want to be too far off from the rest of the family.

Boat rentals of various types, including water mice, pontoons, and canopy boats, are available for rent at the Bayside Marina, which is located across the way at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort. It is an easy walk, and a great, relatively quiet diversion from all of the action of the parks. There are age restrictions regarding the use of certain watercraft, so check out the recreation section for more details.

-If you stop by Community Hall, you can rent equipment for an afternoon of croquet, shuffleboard, or badminton (among other recreational activities). You can also rent bicycles or even a surrey if you are in the mood to tour the promenade.

-The Muscles and Bustles Health Club offers a variety of equipment to help you keep in shape. Tanning and massage services are also available. There are additional fees for use of the health club services.

-Side Show Games Arcade offers video games and arcade style games. An additional arcade, the Sports Arcade, is located inside the ESPN Club.

-The 2 lighted tennis courts are located just nearby, as you can see on the resort map.

-Fantasia Gardens Miniature Golf is located close by too, just off the resort property. It is within walking distance, but little ones may find it a bit far.

-Disney’s Boardwalk Excursions offers a 2-hour fishing excursion starting at $180 for up to 5 people. A children’s excursion, which lasts about 1 hour, for kids 6-12, is available as well. You can catch either from the dock

-A fireworks cruise for viewing Epcot’s nightly display is available at a charge of $167 for up to 7 people. (As an alternative, you can simply step out onto the boardwalk or even look out your window to enjoy the show for a lot less money.)

The BoardWalk Inn & Villas
The BoardWalk Inn & Villas are located nearest to Epcot and MGM Studios, both of which are within walking distance. While they are separate resorts, they share a central lobby, recreational facilities, as well as the BoardWalk entertainment area, where you will find various dining and shopping options.

Dining (for more details click on Disney Dining)
Disney’s BoardWalk Resorts dining options are numerous, ranging from sit-down restaurants to street vendors, all found along the waterfront.

Big River Grille & Brewing Works has a real working brewery so you can see how the beer is brewed. The cuisine is American, offering specialties such as drunken rib eye, grilled apple chops, and sesame tuna. A kids’ menu is available. Advance dining reservations are not available. They are open for lunch, snacks, and dinner.

The Boardwalk Bakery is a small establishment offering fresh baked goods, sandwiches, and beverages.

The
ESPN Club is a must for the sports enthusiast in your family. You won’t miss the action if you eat here. The cuisine is All-American fare with specialties including chili, burgers, hot wings, salads, sandwiches, entrees and deserts. While there is no kids’ menu, there are plenty of appropriate choices. Advance dining reservations are not available. They are open for lunch, snacks, and dinner.

The
Flying Fish Café specializes in seafood (should this surprise you?), with entrées such as potato-wrapped snapper, crab cakes, and oak-grilled steaks. There’s no kids’ menu available, however it’s not the best choice with children along anyway as its menu and atmosphere cater far more to adults. Advance dining reservations are available (and strongly recommended). Open for dinner only.

Spoodles offers Mediterranean cuisine with specialties such as oak-fired flatbread, dips, pastas, and seafood. While there is no kids’ menu, the appetizers are more than generous enough to share. Open for breakfast and dinner. Advance dining reservations are available (and recommended).
Seashore Sweets is a charming old-time sweet shop offers a variety of candies, sweets, and ice cream to tempt your taste buds.

Various food vendors can also be found along the waterfront offering snacks and beverages for a quick bite on the go.

24-hour in-room dining is also available, but be forewarned - while the food is good and there is a decent variety of choices, it’s far more expensive than heading out to the restaurants.

Entertainment
As the clubs cater to an adult crowd for the most part, I have listed them only for your information. If you would like more details concerning them, check out the Disney Web site at www.disney.com.

The Atlantic Dance is open to those over 21 to dance the night away.

Jellyrolls invites those of you over 21 to sing along and join in on the fun at this lively piano bar. There is a cover charge at the door.

The ESPN Club will get you cheering at any age. This sports club has something to offer for everybody in the family, including a sports-themed arcade. As the night goes on however, the crowd favors the adults.

Shopping
Along the boardwalk you can find everything from souvenirs to sundries. A very limited selection of groceries can be found at the Screen Door General Store. Character Carnival offers a bit of kids’ clothing and a variety of character merchandise, while Thimbles and Threads offers a small amount of clothing for adults. Wyland Galleries, famous for its marine artwork, can be found here too. If it’s basic necessities you need, try Dundy’s Sundries, located just off the lobby.

Transportation
You can reach any area of the WDW by motor coach, but if you are going to Epcot or MGM Studios, you have the option of walking (Epcot is closer than MGM) or taking the water ferry. If you have young kids, I would suggest taking the ferry - there will be plenty of time for walking once you reach the parks, and MGM may be a bit far to walk before even really starting your day. If possible, I would avoid the motor coach altogether unless you are going to either the Magic Kingdom or Animal Kingdom.

You can also walk to the Swan, the Dolphin, Disney’s Beach Club, and Disney’s Yacht Club, as they are all connected by walkways and are really not very far off, even for younger children (this may depend on the time of day). The water ferry offers transportation to these resorts as well, but with the time you wait while it docks and departs, you would probably be better off walking, depending on your destination.

In Brief
Themed to the Caribbean islands of Aruba, Barbados, Jamaica, Martinique, and Trinidad, pastel-colored buildings and the lush tropical greenery create an atmosphere that makes you feel as if you have been swept away to an island paradise. The Caribbean theme carries throughout this resort. Located on the shores of Barefoot Bay, the white sandy beach beckons you to come, to play, and to stay. The physical layout of the Caribbean resort gives this large 2,112-room a much more cozy island feel. Surrounding the waters of Barefoot Bay, the resort is divided into several distinctive areas including the Custom House (where you’ll find the front desk, guest services, bell services, restrooms and telephones) and 6 island villages.

Several small clusters of guest buildings, each with its own heated swimming pool and stretch of white sand beach, represents a different island or village. Each island also includes its own laundry facilities. Parrot Cay is an island playground in the middle where you can also find the Barefoot Bay Resort’s main pool. Parrot Cay is themed to a Spanish fort, complete with waterfalls, water slides, and water cannons. Old Port Royale is a wonderfully festive Caribbean marketplace adorned with lush tropical foliage - along with stone walls and cannons to complete the Caribbean feel - where you can find the Caribbean-style restaurants, shops, and entertainment.

This 1-acre island paradise is accessed from the resort by foot bridges. Smaller playgrounds can be found at the Trinidad beaches, and also between the Barbados and Martinique beaches.

-Boombay Games offers arcade-style games. It can be found at Old Port Royale.

animal king. resort photo You will stand in awe upon entering the lobby of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.

Magnificent chandeliers made from African shields hang from the thatched roof high above the lobby, and a massive mud fireplace can be found near the back and off to the side. A suspension bridge overlooks the authentic artwork and artifacts below, only a small sample of the works that adorn the public areas throughout the resort. The resort captures the essence of an African game lodge and celebrates the rich culture of Africa.

Dining

Several stations feature authentic African dishes (with a station dedicated to child-friendly fare as well), each of which with a chef nearby to answer any questions you may have. The market style atmosphere is complimented by the colorful tapestries that drape from above while ornate wroght iron and bamboo railings slightly separate the sitting areas. Even the tables are made from gigantic tree trunks – it’s simply wonderful) and the food is really good too).
For additional information the restaurant is reviewed in more detail in Dining at Disney.

Jiko, while also one of Walt Disney’s better restaurants, features a more sophisticated and adult atmosphere – and is best saved for an evening out without the kids along. While not reviewed here (given it’s not a place that’s really appropriate to bring the kids along) you can check out www.disneyworld.com or www.travel-insights.com (see the parents night out page) for more details.

Shops
Zawadi Market Place is the only shop at the resort and as such is quite large. It offers African-themed, Disney, and resort logo merchandise galore in addition to a small selection of sundries, snack items, and drinks.

In Brief:
These resorts, though operated separately, are listed together here as they share many of their recreational and dining facilities.
Located on the white sandy beaches of Crescent Lake, Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resorts re-create both the grandeur and casual elegance of New England’s seaside towns at the turn of the twentieth century. Each resort exudes its own unique style and atmosphere, apparent through its décor, restaurants, and shops. While they are run separately, they do share an array of recreational facilities, and guests are invited to enjoy the services and amenities available at either property.

The Yacht Club
The oyster gray-and-white clapboard exterior gives way to a grand interior at the Yacht Club. The classic elegance and nautical theme, both exuding an upscale and sophisticated atmosphere, prevails throughout the resort as evidenced by the many port holes, model ships, and navigational instruments scattered throughout the public areas. The lobby is filled with leather furnishings, antique chandeliers, and brass accents, all adding to the upscale atmosphere of a yacht club.

The Beach Club Villas (located just behind Disney’s Beach Club Resort)
The green pastel clapboard exterior with intricate white wood trim was inspired by the seaside turn-of-the-twentieth-century homes of Cape May, New Jersey, and the mid- Atlantic. The Beach Club Villas, run as a completely separate resort from either the Beach Club or Yacht Club resorts, is part of Disney’s vacation club collection. The Villas share all of the dining, recreation, and shopping venues found at Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resorts, but the Villas feature much larger accommodations with kitchens and other additional in-room amenities that put them in the resort category of homeaway- from-home. There is an additional quiet pool accessible only to guests of the Villas.
map

The Beach Club
The blue-and-white stick-style architecture of the Beach Club, similar to that of the grand seaside resorts of New England at the turn of the twentieth century, though with a casualatmosphere, makes Disney’s Beach Club reminiscent of “the good old summertime.” It exudes a more casual beach-house ambience than its sister resort just next door as evidenced by the striped and floral decor, white wicker furnishings, and interior accents like beach umbrellas and seashells.

The Highlights
-One of the best pool and play areas in all of Walt Disney World (or Orlando)

-The wonderful seaside atmosphere (and the ability to choose a posh or casual seaside setting)

-Numerous dining options onsite as well as right nearby at the BoardWalk, Swan and Dolphin (all within walking distance)

-Extensive recreation and entertainment facilities (again additional options are available
given the proximity to the other various resorts)

-The proximity to Epcot – the park’s back entrance (in the World Showcase) is within a short walk

In-Room Amenities
The guest rooms, at 381 square feet, offer a reasonable amount of living space. If you find that you require extra sleeping space however, roll-away beds are available (for a charge of approximately $15 per night). The vanity area (with 2 sinks) is located outside the bathroom which makes getting ready for the day’s adventure much easier as you will not have as much competition for the bathroom. The rooms also include a mini-bar, hair dryer, iron and ironing boards, internet access (for a fee), an in-room safe, a phone with voice mail capabilities and a data port, a refrigerator, coffee maker, and TV speakers in the bath area (so you won’t miss your show when you’re relaxing in a hot bath after a day touring the parks). Centralized laundry facilities 9coin operated) are available as well.

Additional amenities, including microwaves, and portable cribs, are available upon request at no extra charge, but make your request early, as they are limited in quantity and in high demand.

Guest Services
-Magical Express services and Airline Check In (select airlines only)

-ATM(s)

-Guest laundry and valet services are both available

-Internet access (fee)

-Concierge services sell theme park tickets, make Advanced Dining Reservations, provide park maps, and can answer questions regarding your Disney vacation

-Bell services are available

-Beauty and barber shop

-Business center

-Limited spa services

-Room service

Child Care & C
hildren’s Programs
The Sandcastle Club offers supervised child care for potty-trained kids ages 4-12. Hours are from 4:30 p.m. to midnight. The cost is $10 pr hour per child, and dinner is included. The kids can enjoy a variety of activities, movies, and games during their stay. Additional details regarding child care at the Walt Disney World Resort is listed earlier in this chapter.

Recreation
Guests of both resorts can enjoy the cabanas that dot the white sandy beach and the shipwreck of Stormalong Bay (a water park of sorts) just down the way, as well as a variety of additional seaside activities.

Stormalong Bay is an aquatic playground spanning over 2 1/2 acres. Among the palm treesand shrubbery is a life-sized shipwreck, while just nearby are whirlpools and water slides, not to mention the sand-bottom lagoons. Even the smaller children won’t miss out as they have their own toddler-size waterslide nearby as well. Each resort features a quiet pool as well, though in a more remote location. For landlubbers, both resorts feature a small playground too.

The
Bayside Marina is filled with an array of watercraft for rent including hydro bikes and pedal boats, watermice, canopy boats, and pontoons. Fishing excursions are available as well.

-The resorts are located directly across from Disney’s BoardWalk Inn and BoardWalk Villas as well as the Wlat Disney World Swan and Dolphin, allowing guests access to all they have to offer as well.

Dining
An array of dining options from fast food to fine dining, are available right at your doorstop when you stay here. Breakfast is service daily at the
Ale & Compass (located at the Yacht Club), the Beaches & Cream Soda Shop features ice cream in every flavor whether served up in a float, cone, or sundae. The Cape May Café (featuring a character breakfast buffet) serves up a New England-style clam bake each evening (located at the Beach Club). At Hurricane Hanna’s Grill menu items include burgers, hot dogs, and other fast food favorites. The Yacht Club Galley service up traditional breakfasts and light lunches in a nautically themed atmosphere - the theme should come as a surprise?

Last but not least is the
Yachtsman Steakhouse. This however is not a great choice with young children as it is one of Disney’s better dining establishments (thought it’s still fairly casual). Additional details regarding the steakhouse however are listed on the parent’s night out page.

Shops
Fittings & Fairings Clothes & Notions (located at the Yacht Club) and the Atlantic Wear & Wardrobe Emporium (located at the Beach Club) both feature designer resort-wear, swimwear, Disney and resort logo merchandise, souvenirs, and a small selection of snacks and a handful of various sundries.

Overall
Given the variety of offerings in every category (from recreation to dining to the rooms styles) this is by far one of the best resorts for families in Walt Disney World. The nautical seaside theming is a plus for parents and kids alike as it offers something for both. Located directly across from the BoardWalk, Swan and Dolphin resorts, a walk away from Epcot, and only a short ride from Disney-MGM Studios is truly a bonus.

In Brief
Disney’s Wilderness Lodge and Villas transport you to the Great American Northwest of the early 1900s, inspired in part by the Old Faithful Inn of Yellowstone National Park and hidden away among the towering forest of cypress, pine, and oak. The grandeur and serenity of the wilderness surrounds you at this resort. The volcanic meadow erupts with bubbling springs, waterfalls, and active geysers sending their waters to incredible heights.

The grandeur of this mountain-style resort’s rustic architecture surrounds you immediately upon entering the atrium-style lobby, which is shared by both the Lodge and the Villas (though they are 2 entirely separate resorts). The majestic fossilized stone fireplace, gigantic twin totem poles of the Pacific Northwest, and massive bundled log columns supporting the 6-story high roof reflect this resort’s rustic appeal.
Disney’s Wilderness Lodge

Irons and ironing boards are available upon request. Portable cribs are also available upon request, but quantities are limited. Small refrigerators can also be requested.

Deluxe rooms offer additional amenities that include a separate sitting area divided by French doors, an additional TV, a refrigerator and wet bar, and a woodland view.

The Villas at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge

The Cub’s Den is located right on property. Kids ages 4-12 can enjoy a variety of activities as well as having dinner. The program runs from 4:30 p.m. until midnight. Potty training is a must. Reservations are too.

Recreation (for both resorts)
The swimming area is formed among the rocky landscaping, with its waters originating from the bubbling hot springs located inside the lobby. The waters flow to the outside, forming a thundering waterfall that calms and widens to flow into the pool. There is a short waterslide into the pool. Nearby, Fire Rock Geyser spews its waters at regular intervals in the spirit of Old Faithful. The color pools give off a steamy mist to complete the national park atmosphere. There is also a wading pool for younger children along with 2 spas (one hot, one cold). An additional quiet pool is located near the Villas.

You can enjoy the sandy beaches on the shores of Bay Lake as well. There is a roped area where wading is allowed.

-Teton Boat and Bike Rentals offers a wide variety of watercraft including water mice, pontoons, canopy and sailboats. If you prefer to tour around by land, bicycles and surreys are also available.

-Nature trails, bike paths, and jogging paths wind throughout the resort.

-Sturdy Branches Health Club offers a wide variety of exercise equipment to help you keep in shape. A variety of services including tanning and massage are also available. Additional fees are charged for use of this facility. Each day a family is chosen to raise the resort’s flags high atop the roof. You can put in your request to be a flag family at check-in. As this is the only time to submit your name to be chosen, make yourself a note not to forget.

-The Buttons and Bells arcade offers a variety of games.

Dining
At
Artist Point you can enjoy an atmosphere of rustic elegance. The cuisine is Pacific Northwest, offering such specialties as Cedar plank salmon, Penn Cove mussels, seasonal meats, and Artist Point Berry Cobbler, to name just a few. This restaurant has a more upscale flare. Though kids are certainly welcome, I would suggest the Whispering Canyon Café instead.

Whispering Canyon Café offers a casual atmosphere with storytelling and singing. This is a favorite with families, featuring home-style meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The
Roaring Fork offers walk up counter service featuring snacks, burgers, salads, and sandwiches and is open 24/7.

The Trout Bass Pool Bar, located poolside, offers light snacks and drinks.

Room service is available as well.
