Though no official announcements have been made (but are said to be coming soon), Disney is rumored to be revamping the entire Pleasure Island area in order to widen its appeal (to a broader spectrum of guests rather than simply the 21 and over club crowd).

Perfect Planning – Disney Style:
In addition to a rather lengthy list of unique, not to mention helpful, vacation planning tools that Disney has created (all in order to help guests plan the most magical vacation possible) – they’ve managed to come up with a few more.

Disney World has once again revamped their website (
www.disneyworld.com) to ensure that it’s even more user friendly than ever – the most noticeable improvement being an extremely helpful online planning tool aptly named My Disney Vacation. My Disney Vacation? enables guests to plan out practically every aspect of their Disney vacation from beginning to end, based entirely on their own individual interests. And in order to offer guests an even more personalized experience, Disney now allows guests an opportunity to create their very own customized theme park maps - families can simply highlight their favorite attractions and activities– selecting only the attractions, shows and entertainment venues that they wish to include - mirroring the theme park itinerary that they’ve developed and created themselves. Magically the maps will appear at their doorstep (well, almost magically – they’re really delivered via the mail). The entire process however, can take up to 4 weeks so be sure to allow sufficient time. And the bonus - they’re free!

To check it out for yourself, visit
www.disneyworld.com - click on My Disney Vacation, then Customized Maps.

If you prefer the news to come to you, you can have the latest Disney news delivered right to your desktop via
Disney Link. Once you’ve downloaded the program, DisneyLink does all the work- alerting you the moment that updates become available - including what’s new, what’s happening, and what specials are currently being offered, as well as planning tips, and even the Walt Disney World weather.

Disney Transportation:
Magic in Motion is Disney’s latest attempt at improving their resort-wide bussing system. While rolling out in phases, the end result is slated to include automated speils and themed music playing as you ride, and more importantly - shorter wait times thanks to a better dispatch and monitoring system.

US Airways joined in Disney’s Magical Express Resort Airline Check-In Service on September 12, 2007. US Airways is among a growing list of airlines that have partnered witmagic expressh Walt Disney World (and the second new airline to join in recent months – it was only this past May that Air Tran Airways joined the program) to enable passengers (on domestic flights) to check their luggage and obtain their boarding pass before leaving their Walt Disney World resort. This, of course, allows guests to avoiding the lengthy airport check-in lines making departure a bit more magical (okay, how about easier and less stressful) than ever before. In addition to US Airways, airlines currently offering this helpful service include Air Tran Airways, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways, Northwest Airlines and United Airlines/Ted.

For those who don’t already know, guests who take advantage of Disney's Magical Express can check their specially tagged bags at their hometown airport, sit back, relax, and enjoy their flight to Florida, then, upon arriving at the Orlando International Airport, bypass the baggage claim area all together and head directly to Disney’s Magical Express motor coaches - and they’re off to their Walt Disney World Resort. Luggage will be delivered to their resort room later that day thanks to Disney. This is a complimentary service offered to guests of the Walt Disney World resorts. For additional details on Disney’s Magical Express click over to ?the benefits of staying onsite? on the Walt Disney World Resorts page.

At the Walt Disney World Resorts
All of the construction at Disney’s Contemporary Resort has everyone wondering what’s going on – so just what is going on? Lots! Adjacent to the existing Contemporary resort “The Kingdom Tower” is beginning to rise – and quickly. While Disney has yet to officially announce the project, it has been reported that papers have been filed stating that the tower at the Contemporary Resort will be part of the Disney’s Vacation Club – though keep in mind that until Disney officially confirms this, it is technically only speculation (and the rooms could simply be used as resort rooms rather than time shares).

Either way, it is the guest who will benefit from additional space (slated to include not only additional rooms but swimming pools, water play areas, a restaurant, lounge, various other amenities, and a pedestrian bridge to connect it with the main resort). Word has it that construction is scheduled for completion in late 2009. Additional details (and official announcements) will be posted as they become available.

The first phase of construction at
Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is now complete as 109 Villas (located on the upper floors of the existing lodge) stand ready for booking – but that’s just the beginning. 340 villas are currently under construction in Kidani Village (an entirely new area that will stand adjacent to the existing lodge) which is slated to include an all new full service restaurant, a 4,700 square-foot pool (with a water slide and two spas) as well as additional recreational facilities and amenities. The second phase is scheduled to make its debut in the spring of 2009.

wizard world
While Disney’s not making any official announcements quite yet, word has it that Disney’s Treehouse Villas will soon see life again. Whether as resort rooms or time shares, no yet one knows – what is known however, is that the plans are slated to include a more tree-house feel than ever before with an incredibly small first floor that branches out (forgive the pun) to a substantially larger upper level supported by sets of pilings.

Additional details (and official announcements) will be posted as they become available.

Looking for the hippest club in town – then head to
Rix at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort. The atmosphere is chic and trendy (thanks in part to an eclectic mix of glass and wrought iron accents, intriguingly dramatic lighting, and flowing stories-high curtains (think hip high-end Las Vegas-style lounge and you’ll get the idea). Drinks and appetizers area fresh and trendy (and as impressive as the décor and atmosphere of the club itself – and as far removed from the typical bar food found elsewhere as you can get). While not an appropriate choice with kids (keeping in mind that this site is dedicated to family travel), Rix is the perfect spot for a parents night out on the town (without the kids in tow).

It’s all in the name: Disney’s changing the name of one of their resort categories – The Disney Vacation Club Resorts will now be called 'Disney Deluxe Villas Resorts'.

Why change you ask? The new category was created in an effort to alleviate the confusion regarding availability of Disney Vacation Club rooms as nightly rentals (they are after all timeshares of sorts).

Resorts in this category currently include: Disney's Old Key West Resort, The Villas at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge, Disney's Beach Club Villas, Disney's BoardWalk Villas, The Villas at Disney's Wilderness Lodge and Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa.

Names aren’t the only thing changing when it comes to the Walt Disney World Resorts -
effective January 1, 2008 resort rates will change as well – they’ll become date specific.
That means that if you book a room for seven nights and four of the nights fall into one rate category and three fall into another, you’ll pay different rates depending on the night.

While Disney will be happy to let you know how much your entire stay will cost, but you’ll have to ask if you want to find out which nights (if any ) are based on a different rate.
Click Here for details, rates and other package information.

The Wilderness Back Trail Adventure,
an all new Segway tour, is now being offered at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground. The two-hour outdoor adventure takes guests along the resorts many paths and trails - even through the woods. It’s a unique experience to say the least. This new Segway tour (on specially designed “offroad-style” segway transporters – don’t worry, a brief “how to” training session is included) is offered twice a day on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at a cost of $85 per person. Guests must be at least 16 years old.

Reservations can be made up to 90 days in advance – just call 407-WDW-TOUR to make arrangements.

Disney Resorts are now smoke-free. As of June 1st (2007) smoking has been banned at all of the Disney owned and operated resorts. The policy states that smoking is only prohibited in guest rooms, indoor public areas, and on balconies (among other public locations). Smoking, as of June 1st, will only be permitted in a small number of designated smoking areas – all of which are located outdoors.

This is similar to the policy already in place at the Walt Disney World theme parks where smoking is permitted only in designated smoking areas (of which there are only a few).

* Disney offers a slew of Kid's Programs including an all-new “Bush Camp” now being offered at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

While not an entirely new program (the Bush Camp was previously available to guests staying at the Animal Kingdom Lodge), the Bush Camp now offers kids (ages 6-14 regardless of where they’re staying) the opportunity to learn about the African Culture through a variety of activities including games, arts and crafts, food and fun. They’ll even get the chance to safari out on the savannah. The “Bush Camp” is offered on Saturdays from 1 pm to 4 pm. Reservations must be made ahead of time and a credit card deposit is required. The cost is $70 per child. $20 of the cost will be donated to the Wildlife Conservation fund. For information or to book reservations call 407-WDW-PLAY (407- 939-7529).

Kids ages 4-10 will also find an abundance of high seas grand adventures to choose from when staying at one of Disney’s themed resorts:

The Pirate Adventure (departing from Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa) takes kids on a treasure hunt around Bay Lake and Seven Seas Lagoon in search of a pirate booty and buried treasure. Pint sized pirates can search the seas for treasure on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 9:30 am.

The Caribbean Pirate Adventure (departing from Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort) takes kids on a different kind of treasure hunt as the ship sets sail upon the Caribbean seas, the captain regaling tales of treasure along the voyage. The ship sets sail on Sundays and Tuesdays at 9:30 am.

The Albatross Treasure Cruise (departing from Disney's Yacht & Beach Club Resorts) offers kids the opportunity to search for clues along Crescent Lake and Epcot's World Showcase lagoon – all leading to a hidden treasure. The cruise departs on Wednesdays and Fridays at 9:30 am.

Disney’s Bayou Pirate Adventure Cruise (departing from Disney's Port Orleans Resort-Riverside), offers kids the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of pirate John Lafitte as they follow his map on a hunt for hidden treasure. The boat departs on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:30 am.

The new pirate-themed adventures cost $28.17 per child and includes lunch and a themed goodie bag. For additional information go to
www.disneyworld.com or call 407/824- 4321.

At The Magic Kingdom
The Haunted Mansion officially re-opened in late 2007 after a rather lengthy refurbishment. Instead, however, of dramatic changes, riders will find the spectral storyline strengthened- reinforced with the addition of even more ghoulish ghosts, unearthly high tech effects, and plenty of sinister silliness adding to all the fun.
haunted mansion
*Disney’s latest year long celebration, The Year of a Million Dreams, brings with it several exciting street-style shows.

Captain Jack Sparrow’s Pirate Tutorial (taking place in Adventureland, near the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction): Captain Jack and his mate Mack are in charge of training future pirates in the art of swordplay, making menacing pirate grimaces, and more. Upon completion, future pint-sized pirates will be sworn in as official swashbucklers as they say the
pirate’s oath to become honorary buccaneers and part of Captain Jack’s crew.

Woody’s Cowboy Camp! (taking place in Frontierland): If you’re lookin’ for a Rootin’ Tootin’ good time…well…you’ve moseyed on over to just the right place. Woody, Jesse, and Bullseye head into town, rounding up guests for the big hoedown along the way. Kids will get to giddy-up, riding on wooden stick horses, through a cowboy obstacle course that’s scattered with cacti, mountains, and mineshafts (which are in fact really their parents donning funny shaped hats) as Bullseye leads the way. For Toy Story fans and kiddie-cowboys (or girls) - this one’s a must!

Main Street Family Fun Day Parade (along Main Street U.S.A.): Never before Have guest been invited to join in on the parade along Main Street U.S.A., however keep in mind – this is the “Year of a Million Dreams”. Guests can march down Main Street right along with their favorite Disney characters, floats, and marching bands – there’s even a pint-sized stroller drill team (ensuring that little ones still in strollers – and their parents, have a place in the parade too). Upon reaching Town Square the parade ends with a bang as a patriotic finale wraps up the event.

Also Happening at the Magic Kingdom…

* The Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique has come to the Magic Kingdom: Pint sized princesses can now get a "magical makeover" at the Magic Kingdom – which I have to say, is a most appropriate location. The second boutique (the first is located at Downtown Disney) has opened its pixie dusted doors in the most magical palace in the park - Cinderella Castle.

princese Princesses can choose from three makeover packages including:
>The "Coach" (which includes a hairstyle and shimmering makeup)
>The "Crown"(which includes a hairstyle, nails and shimmering makeup)
>The "Castle" (which includes a hairstyle, nails, shimmering makeup, a photo package and princess costume of their choice complete with crown, wand and shoes).

And princesses-to-be can choose from three distinctive hairstyles; the Disney Diva, the Pop Princess or the Fairytale Princess.

The Magic Kingdom salon is open every day from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Children must be three years or older and theme park admission is required. Reservations are recommended, and can be made by calling 407/WDW-STYLE (407/939-7895) up to 180 days in advance.

alert
Reservations for magical makeovers are highly suggested at the Magic Kingdom’s Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique (as well as at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique at Downtown Disney).

At Epcot
“Don’t Waste It” is the newest exhibit at Epcot’s Innoventions East – The area features a handful of edutaining games that help guests to better understand exactly what happens to garbage – and how they can help to reduce what they produce.

Future Innoventions exhibits are slated to include “StormStruck” (opening late summer 2008). The area will allow guests an opportunity to learn about severe weather (including hurricanes and various other storms) and to gain a better understanding of how they can help to protect their homes thanks to cutting edge technologies currently being developed.

Epcot’s International Flower & Garden Festival returns this spring – bigger and better than ever. The festival, beginning on March 19, bursts into bloom with a “Fun in the Sun” theme and keeps on blooming for 75 days (through June 1). Whimsical character topiaries, brilliant beds of flowers, rose displays, water gardens and many more verdant exhibits set the scene aroundlogo Epcot's Future World and World Showcase for a garden party that only Disney could throw. As guests enter the park near Spaceship Earth, they'll spot a 14-foot Goofy topiary riding a 6-foot wave of flowers and plants. Sandcastles and palm trees surround Mickey and Minnie topiaries posed on a floral beach towel spread upon a sandy "beach." At World Showcase Plaza, Disney topiary specialists have crafted a volleyball beach scene starring Donald Duck and Daisy. Nearby, a topiary Pluto frolics while colorful Stitch from "Lilo and Stitch" keeps watch from a lifeguard stand.

New festival fun includes:
Peter Pan's Neverland Garden, a children's area along the Imagination Walkway from Future World to World Showcase featuring a pirate ship-themed garden with whimsical topiaries of Peter Pan, Captain Hook, Tinker Bell and Tic Toc Croc plus a shaded play structure.

Sweeping Future World flower beds, planted on the shores of East and West Lakes, in the shape of nautical flags representing letters (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, etc.) that spell a message to be decoded by guests.

The zany Three Caballeros - Donald Duck, parrot Jose Carioca and Panchito, the Mexican charro rooster - as topiaries celebrating their new Epcot show, "Gran Fiesta Tour starring the Three Caballeros" in the Mexico pavilion.

In all, up to 70 topiaries plus 30 million blooms, artfully designed floral beds, expertly crafted bonsai trees and lush rose gardens grace the 300 acres of Future World and World Showcase. According to Disney horticultural manager Eric Darden, Disney's horticultural team plants two crop rotations during the fest to allow for a more brilliant floral display for the festival's duration
.

Beyond the dazzling displays of blooms, the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival is known by gardening aficionados for its celebrity guest speakers, hands-on seminars and innovative planting demonstrations and exhibits such as a new Florida-style Key to Outdoor Living garden display. Roger Swain of PBS's "The Victory Garden" and "green" gardening expert Joe Lamp'l (a.k.a. joe gardener) lead the lineup of nationally known gardening gurus slated to meet and share tips with guests. Each evening, Flower Power concerts rock the park with live entertainment from top acts of the 1960s and '70s. Acts include The Guess Who, Davy Jones, Jose Feliciano, Petula Clark, Paul Revere and the Raiders and other crowd-pleasers.

The March-April lineup of acts includes a trio of Flower Power newcomers -- Jay Black ("Cara Mia," "This Magic Moment"), The Happenings ("See You in September") and The Ventures ("Walk, Don't Run"). There'll also be a "British Invasion" in March-April with the return of Petula Clark ("Downtown"), Peter & Gordon ("A World without Love") and Herman's Hermits starring Peter Noone ("Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter"). Guests waiting to Soar through the skies over California’s countryside on Disney World’s Soarin’ (at Epcot’s Land Pavilion in Future World) now have something more to do than just fidget while waiting in the often lengthy lines?those waiting to ride will now find a slew of interactive games to keep them busy and entertained. Instead of the stills that once lined the queue of Epcot’s Soarin’, guests will now find five huge video screens – and thanks to motion sensing technology instead of simply waiting it out in line they can play a variety of interactive games. Guests can fly a bird through a narrow passageway that runs along a canyon river or reveal hidden images by splatting the screen with giant paint balls – each game more challenging than the last. They’re so engaging you may even forget you’re in line - just don’t forget to get on the ride!

*An updated O Canada! has arrived. Guests can experience Canada’s breathtaking wilderness, the excitement of it’s cities, and the diversity of it’s inhabitants thanks to the addition of spectacular new footage and the addition of a new, though very familiar, host - Martin Short.

*Two new exhibits can soon be found in the American Pavilion
National Treasures; A rare collection of trinkets, treasures, and personal items from historical American figures including Abraham Lincoln, George Washington Carver, Rosa Parks, and Jackie Robinson among others. The exhibit, which begins on September 28, will be ongoing – the items displayed however may change from time to time.

The American Adventure, a presentation that showcases the people and events that have helped to shape this country, now features scenes that include September 11th, the victories of Lance Armstrong, and Oprah Winfrey work with African children.

*The France pavilion in Epcot’s World Showcase now features Guerlain’s newest boutique (one of only four boutiques located in the United States). A selection of limited-edition fragrances and exclusive Guerlain creations are now available amongst an atmosphere of sheer elegance.

*Mickey’s magical wand, once high atop Epcot’s Spaceship Earth, is down. The wand, constructed in celebration of the millennium, has been removed coinciding with the refurbishment of the ride and the parks 25th anniversary.

* Epcot’s icon, Spaceship Earth, recently underwent a several changes, including a much needed update. Siemens has partnered with Disney to create a new twist (or two) to the attraction's time-travel adventure through the past which includes an all new ending that allows guests to peak into the future.

Enhancements have been made to the existing scenes and new scenes have been added. New lighting effects, costumes, set decoration, narration and music have also been added. The adventure through time has been further
spaceship earth enhanced through new, interactive touch screens installed aboard each "time machine" (or car if you will), enabling guests to create their own idea of what the future will look like - and even to see themselves in that future.

"
Project Tomorrow: Inventing the World of Tomorrow," is an all new interactive exhibit area located just beyond the exit of the ride. Guests will be able to glimpse at the what the future holds in areas of medicine, transportation and energy management through interactive games and displays that showcases a variety of innovative technologies. The first phases of Project Tomorrow (now open to Epcot guests) include:

An illuminated globe measuring 20 feet in diameter that will offer an ever-changing collage of inspirational images that invite guests to imagine the wonders of tomorrow.

Body Builder, a 3-D game that enables users to assemble a digital human body, simulating the Siemens technology developed to perform remote surgeries.

Super Driver, a driving simulation video game that showcases motor vehicle accident and avoidance systems developed by Siemens.

*Information Boards are becoming more and more popular – and with good reason – they list everything from wait times at the rides to daily show schedules to FastPass information and more – all of which is very helpful to guests trying to plan out their day.
*A new board has been installed near The Land pavilion in Future World.

*
An all new character spot has opened at Epcot. Located just behind Fountainview Cafe in Innoventions West, an all new indoor area has been created where kids (and parents) can meet and greet their favorite Disney characters.

* At Epcot's Mexico pavilion, the "Gran Fiesta Tour Starring the Three Caballeros" has made it's debut. This all-new boat ride replaces "El Rio Del Tiempo", and features an entirely new storyline staring Donald Duck, José Carioca (the parrot), and Panchito (the Mexican charro rooster), a group of colorful characters straight out of the 1944 Disney classic "The Three Caballeros."

The new storyline has the three caballeros reuniting for a performance in Mexico City. Donald, however, wanders off to take in the sites of Mexico – leaving José and Panchito to search for him. An animated overlay allows the characters to blend with the existing backdrops, though enhancements have been made to the props, set facades and sound system in order to keep it updated.

* "The Seas with Nemo & Friends," is a whimsical attraction for guests of all ages.
Guests aboard "clamobiles" float amid the coral reef where they meet up with Mr. Ray and his class on a field trip. They soon learn that Nemo has once again wandered off and so begins your journey. Along the way, familiar characters such as Dory, Bruce, Crush and Marlin join in. This attraction anchors the newly renamed and re-launched The Seas with Nemo & Friends pavilion (formerly The Living Seas).

* Mission: SPACE now offers a second less motion intensive version along side the original thrill-a-minute ride. Signs are posted throughout the queue listing the differences between the two experiences – the biggest difference being that the milder version no longer has a spinning centrifuge, making it better suited for guests who couldn’t ride the original and far more intense version. Just click on Mission: SPACE for all the details.

There are nine steps in all, each allowing you a chance to choose exactly the part you want to create your light saber, including the color of the blade, the sleeve rings, the hilt sleeves and the ignition switches among other various do-dads. You can even pick out filters and crystals (in red, purple, green, or blue) to create an authentic glow - and each lightsaber features authentic Star Wars sound effects.

The hardest part of the process is getting started – you’ll have to choose between a Jedi or a Sith lightsaber before searching through the bins filled with custom parts for each. What you add on after that is completely up to you – you can create your own design or follow the instructions to replicate your favorite Star Wars character’s lightsaber – including Anakin Skywalker’s, Obi-Wan Kenobi’s and Darth Vader’s – even Darth Maul’s double-bladed lightsaber.

*New Dining Options at Disney's Animal Kingdom:

The restaurant features an atmosphere inspired by the Himalayan foothills, blending in with the surrounding Himalayan village and nearby attraction -Expedition Everest. The restaurant features both indoor sit down dining (with seating for up to 250) and outdoor counter service dining (with seating for up to 350), both with menus filled with Asian-Fusion offerings.

Elsewhere at Disney's Animal Kingdom, the
Tusker House (located in Africa) reopened in November 2007, as a buffet restaurant (rather than a counter service eatery). In addition to the new look, a character breakfast - Donald's Safari Breakfast is now offered in the morning (from 8 am -10:30 am) replacing Donald's Breakfastosaurus (located at the Restaurantosaurus in Dinoland). Restaurantosaurus, located in the DinoLand U.S.A., while no longer offering a character breakfast (Donald's Breakfastosaurus at Restaurantosaurus closes Nov. 5), will remain open as a quick-service restaurant (open from 11:30 am until park closing). For detailed reviews and menus of these and other Animal Kingdom eateries, Click Here.

*Disney’s testing out an all new automated ordering system in order to help alleviate the lengthy lines often found at the theme parks counter service eateries. They can simply plug in their order (though at the moment only a partial menu is available – it is after still in testing phases), pay (by credit card, Disney gift card, or Room Charge, or Disney Dining Plan only – no cash), and pick up their order at the counter. While the machines are currently incapable of accepting special orders(and again, only a limited menu is available) it wouldn’t surprise me to see the automated systems make their way into more counter service eateries in the very near future.
