Universal Orlando Resorts in Detail |

As a Note:
While the pricing may seem high at the resorts at Universal Orlando (okay the prices are high they dont just seem that way), be sure to check out Universals official website (www.universalorlando.com) for the latest and most current rates being offered (and they offer discounted rates quite often throughout the year). You will often find rates that offer substantial savings and those who may not have otherwise considered the resorts within their price range may very well be enticed into making a reservation. Additional promotions and packages that combine park tickets, car rentals, and other vacation package-style offerings are usually available too.

In Brief
Even as you drive up the winding roadway lined with grape vines and greenery you feel as if you are touring the picturesque countryside of northern Italy. Olive trees and cypress are plentiful, and a grand and ornate entrance welcomes you at the end of the roadway. The same can be felt if you arrive from the harbor by water taxi as you take in the full view of the beautifully colored stucco buildings in muted hues of golden yellows and sun-washed reds inspired by the architecture and colors of the Mediterranean. To recreate this look with absolute authenticity, the buildings were painted in the very same technique used hundreds of years ago in Italys fishing villages.
Throughout the grounds of this resort, an almost exact replica of the Italian seaside village of Portofino, the attention to detail is apparent, including the Italian sports cars and Vespas parked along the piazza among the array of small shops and restaurants.
Filled with cobblestone streets, stone fountains, and archways, there is an air of elegance throughout the entire resort.
The Highlights:
-the spectacular Italian seaside village setting
-luxurious rooms and amenities
-extensive guest services (with service that is excellent in itself)
-extensive and unique recreational facilities
-the close proximity to the Universal Orlando theme parks
-Campo-Portofino; a supervised childrens program
-the proximity to the Universal Orlando theme parks
-the perks including unlimited Express Pass access at the Universal Orlando theme parks and priority seating at many of Universal Orlandos restaurants
The Rooms and the In-Room Amenities
The Portofino Bay offers an array of luxurious and well-appointed rooms reflective of the grand style found throughout the resort itself. The decor is reflective of the old country style of Italy and filled with authentic furnishings. All 750 rooms and suites were renovated in the fall of 2005, to create an elegant and warm Italian villa experience You wont, however, miss any of the modern conveniences as state-of-the-art smart room technology alerts the staff as to when the mini-bar is in need of replenishment or when the room is empty and ready for housekeeping so as not to disturb the guests.
The standard rooms offer a king bed and pull-out sofa, or 2 queen beds and an optional roll-away, sleeping up to 5 quite comfortably. Other amenities include an in-room safe, three telephones (with data ports and voice mail), a TV with cable and on-Command movies, a coffee maker, an iron and ironing board, refreshment pantry (for an additional fee), a hair dryer and makeup mirror, and high speed internet access (for a fee of $9.95 per day).
The deluxe rooms are slightly larger and include a few additional amenities including a VCR and CD player, a fax machine, as well as a separate shower and tub in the bath. The kids suites are a bit different than most you will encounter elsewhere as they have an entire room (only accessible through the main room) all to themselves, connected of course to the parents king room. There are 2 twin beds, a TV, and a Sony Playstation, as well as a child-sized table and chairs, all decorated with a child in mind.
Additional suites are also available, including the Villa Suite and the Portofino Suite. Both are well-suited for adults, featuring a separate entertainment area complete with TV, VCR, CD player, and a pull-out sofa, along with an additional full bath connected to the adjoining bedroom(s). While it is not themed for younger children like the kids suite is, it is quite appropriate for older kids and teens.
Club level rooms include additional benefits such as CD and DVD players, welcome and turn down service, complimentary admission to the fitness center, and club concierge services. Also included are complimentary beverages served throughout the day, a continental breakfast served each morning, afternoon hors doeuvres and beverages, and desserts served in the evenings. A CD and DVD library is available as are a billiards table and game tables.

The Restaurants
The Portofino offers something to please everyones palate, with 8 unique eateries located right at the resort itself. In addition, there is the plethora of dining options located throughout the entire Universal Orlando property, including those found at CityWalk, Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, and the Royal Pacific Resort and Hard Rock Hotel.
You may notice that select restaurants, in particular Bice, is not reviewed below. This in no way reflects of the quality of their food, ambience, or their service. In fact, Bice offers one of the finest dining experiences in the Orlando area, featuring not only an exceptional menu and elegant surroundings, but a romantic atmosphere (though service has at times been slightly snooty). Ive simply omitted restaurants that are considered inappropriate for the average family with children in tow and Bice is definitely an establishment that caters to an adult crowd. You will however find a review of Bice on the Parents Night Out page.

Overall
Campo Portofino is certainly a fun place for kids to play while their parents are enjoying some well-deserved time off, and the Beach Pool has some great features like the zero entry, water slide, and sandy beach area. Of course, having your own room (if you are staying in the kids suite) can be lots of fun for kids too, but personally I just feel much more comfortable in an atmosphere that is far less lavish when traveling with kids in tow.
And to be honest, the kids probably couldnt care less that it replicates the beautiful Italian coastal village of Portofino. If my 5-year-old decided it was time for a full-blown temper tantrum (or even just a minor one), or my boys were to start poking at each other until the inevitable squabble erupted, this would in no way be the place I would want to be, and requiring that your children be on their absolutely best behavior 24/7 is a bit much to ask of them especially after theyve spent the day at the parks.
While the hotel offers plenty of amenities for kids of every age and certainly provides services to help the parents get through it all, overall it is just not that appropriate for toddlers and young children. The number of staircases alone is enough to daunt anyone sporting a stroller. While families are certainly welcomed, the resort caters more to adults with a taste for elegant and upscale surroundings as well as exceptional personal service.
Those with children of middle-school age (tweens and teens) however would likely fare well.

In Brief
The sculpture of guitars that form the centerpiece of the hotels front fountain is just a preview of what awaits beyond the hotels grand entrance. The hotel was designed to remind you of a California mission-style estate - a rock stars estate, in fact - filled with an unmatched collection of rock n roll memorabilia and artwork gathered throughout his travels. One of Elton Johns many outlandish outfits from his 1984 world tour, and an authentic rhinestone-encrusted bell-bottomed jumpsuit formerly worn by the King himself, and even a guitar used by Aerosmiths Steven Tyler from their 1968 world tour can be seen adorning this hip hotel along with an array of other unique and one-of-a-kind pieces.

and line the hallways

Other suites are also available, though the most appropriate for families other than the kids suite is the king suite. At an impressive 650 square feet of living space, these suites are fit for 'The King.' This guest room is a generous sized junior suite with a king bed and extra living space where you can entertain or just spread out and chill. There are several dining options to choose from at the Hard Rock Hotel, with The Kitchen perhaps the most appropriate for families.

The Kitchen Menu
This recently redesigned restaurant truly offers something for everybody from the Kids Crib dining area with child-sized furniture and a plasma TV, to the Pantry, a private dining room off to itself. They are open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and as you might expect the atmosphere is casual and fun. The rather extensive menu offers quite a variety of choices at every meal. Eggs of every style, pancakes, cereals, and fruits are available at breakfast, which also includes its own kids menu with appropriate portions as well as prices. At breakfast you have the choice of ordering à la carte or heading to the extensive buffet. Lunch includes burgers, salads, sandwiches and soups, again with its own menu for kids with a huge selection of their favorites, including some great choices for older kids who just cant manage an entire adult portion yet. There is seating both indoors and out, all with a great view of the pool and all those palms. And keep your eye out for rock n roll celebs to be cooking up a meal at the chefs table every now and then.

Character Dining: Saturday evenings 6:00 - 9:00 pm
Hard Rock Beachclub
**
$$
Specialty: American (kids menu)
Open for lunch and dinner
The Hard Rock Beachclub Menu
The Beachclub is really more of a poolside snack bar than a restaurant, but the menu offers burgers, pizza, sandwiches and salads, and even some kid-friendly favorites.
Counter service is the norm, but you can also hail one of the servers who can be found roaming about the pool for just such an occasion.
Personally, I find a casual lunch by the pool much more relaxing, especially with younger kids. They dont feel as trapped, having to sit down and sit still, as they tend to in the confines of a traditional restaurant. It definitely makes for a great occasional alternative.
Emack & Bolios
*
$-$$
Specialty: Ice cream treats and pastries
Open all day
If youre in the mood for a quick pick-me-up, this is the place. While carry-out items like pastries, yogurt, and coffee are available in the mornings, it is the premium ice cream and smoothies that will tempt your taste buds here. Located just off the pool, it makes for a perfect retreat from the sun. What better way is there to cool off than with an ice-cold ice cream, especially with whimsical rock n roll flavors like Strawberry Fields Forever and Deep Purple Cow? You get the idea.
A Starbucks is located onsite as well adjacent to Emack & Bolios and is open from 6:30 am till 11 pm daily.
24-hour room service is available as well.
The Velvet Bar and the Palm Restaurant (both open only for dinner) have been purposely left off the list as they are really only appropriate for an adult crowd however reviews can be found on the Parents Night Out page.
Shopping
There is only one shop located at the hotel, named the Rock Shop. Unless you are souvenir shopping, the selection is slim in the way of sundries, so stock up with kids supplies before you arrive. If however youre in search of Hard Rock or Universal merchandise, they offer a reasonably good selection of T-shirts and trinkets.
Overall
All in all, even with its upscale amenities and luxurious surroundings, the stylish, hip yet casual atmosphere is much more laid-back than other resorts of this caliber, making this a good choice for families.

In Brief
The glamour and charm of the 1930s is apparent throughout this exotic retreat, reminiscent of an era when travel to the islands was only possible for a privileged few. Upon entering the resort, having made your way across the elaborate bamboo bridge suspended high above the terraced rice patties and waterfalls, youll immediately feel as if youve been whisked away to a remote island of the South Pacific.
The resorts lobby surrounds a spectacular open-air orchid court, with stone pillars and tremendous plate-glass windows creating its perimeter. The delicate and colorful flowers are scattered throughout the garden while hand-carved stone maidens and elephants gently spout water into a tranquil reflecting pool. The lobby itself is filled with mahogany furnishings, hand painted panels, batik wall hangings, and intricate carvings of stone and wood, creating an atmosphere reflective of an enchanting island paradise.
Surrounding the grand lagoon-style pool are sugary white sands, swaying palm trees, and dense exotic shrubbery. Adding to the ambiance is an old abandoned clipper plane, floating in the nearby lagoon, just like the one Captain Jake used to island-hop through the South Pacific, or so the story goes. Walkways wind through the towering bamboo, palms, and tropical vegetation, while stone lanterns lead guests back to the resort or off to the parks depending on which path you decide to take.
Of the three Loews Hotels at Universal Orlando, Royal Pacific is the largest - and likely the best choice for families with younger children (under 7 or 8) given its casual islandfriendly atmosphere and offerings.
The Highlights:
-the spectacular South Pacific island themed setting
-the Mariners Club; a supervised childrens program
-extensive guest services (with service that is excellent in itself)
-extensive recreational facilities including the largest lagoon-style pool anywhere around
-the close proximity to the Universal Orlando parks
-the perks including unlimited Express Pass ride access at the Universal Orlando theme parks and priority seating at many of Universal Orlandos restaurants
-the proximity to the Universal Orlando theme parks
The Rooms and in-room amenities:
With 1,000 rooms and suites to choose from, this is by far the largest of all the Loews Hotels at Universal Orlando Resort. The décor throughout the guest rooms is simple yet elegant - reflective of the Dutch colonial period featuring rich dark wood furnishings, hand-carved panels, and vintage travel posters. While standard rooms have either a king or two queen beds the king suites (or executive suites as theyre called) are a great alternative for families as they feature a completely separate living area (with a pull out sofa for added sleeping space) and bedroom. Additional (and far more extravagant) suites are available as well. Room amenities (found in all rooms) include smart room technology, an occupancy sensor with climate control, a refreshment panty (additional fees apply), a phone with a data port and voicemail capabilities, evening turndown service upon request, a hair dryer and makeup mirror, iron and ironing board, coffee maker, TV with cable and On-Command movies, a CD player, Playstation controls, high speed internet access (with a fee of $9.95 per day), and an in-room safe. Suites feature additional amenities including CD and DVD players as well as other upgraded amenities.
Club level rooms (known as the Royal Club) come, of course, with additional benefits including use of the club lounge (where a daily continental breakfast, afternoon snacks and beverages, and evening desserts are served), the services of the club concierge, and free use of the fitness facility.

The Recreational Facilities
The tremendous lagoon-style pool sits amidst towering palm trees, tropical plant life, sandy white beaches, and thatched-roof cabanas a truly tropical paradise. The pools zero entry allows guests to feel as if theyre simply wading right out into the lagoon - as if it were truly a tropical island.
Kids will appreciate the partially sunken ocean liner its mast and bridge towering above the pool. The Royal Bali Sea is filled with fun for kids of all ages including a wheelhouse complete with a ships wheel, telegraph, a deck, and towering smokestacks.
Theres 14 water cannons, 2 lifeboats (water streaming and pouring down from them), water guns and water squirters (manned by the crew of kids climbing all about), with water jets that squirt water right up from the ground, and water curtains that pour sheets of water practically everywhere. Theres even a wading pool for younger crew members to splash around in.
The best features for parents - they can rest and relax alongside the lush lagoon at the very same time their kids are sailing the Pacific seas. The sheer size (not to mention the shape) of the pool allows guests to sit as near or as far from the childrens interactive play area as they like those in search of a quieter more relaxing experience can head to a more secluded area of the lagoon while those with children can easily keep an eye on them from right nearby.
As a note: Cabana rentals can be arranged by calling 407-503-3235 (additional fees apply)
Additional recreational facilities include:
-a croquet lawn
-The gymnasium; a 5,000 square foot fitness center (there is a daily fee [with multi-day passes available at a discounted rate] to use the facility unless you are staying in a club level room in which case use of the facility is at no charge). Massages are available by appointment on select days.

Specialty: American
Open for lunch and dinner
Jakes Menu
Jakes is more of a bar & grill than a true sit down restaurant however its a lively place to dine. During the evening however the atmosphere is geared more towards adults- especially the bar.
Hours: 2 pm till 11 pm daily (the bar is open till 2 am)
Bula Bar & Grille is the resorts poolside eatery and features an array of tropical drinks, sandwiches, wraps, and burgers. Hours are from 11 am till evening (depending on time of year)
The Orchid Court Lounge
Located in the lobby, overlooking the spectacular pool area, the Orchid Court Lounge is filled with hand carved Balinese furnishings and accented with colorful and delicate orchids. A continental breakfast and coffee is served here daily while during the afternoon and evening hours, appetizers, light meals, and cocktails are served. The lounge however is a place for adults to rest and relax (many often working away at their laptops) and is really not a good choice for families in search of a place to dine with children in tow.
The Orchid Court Sushi Bar is the newest addition to the resorts lineup of restaurants and eateries. Open from 5 pm till 11 pm daily, the sushi bar serves up a selection of innovative sushi and sashimi presentations along with Asian-inspired desserts and South Seas martinis (including the Tahitini and the Cherry Blossom Saketini). The Sushi Bar, like the lounge, is an appropriate choice for adults rather than families.
