With so many hotels and resorts located along the barrier islands, it was most difficult to narrow them down to a reasonable number. A number of hotels stood out among their competition by providing exceptional facilities, amenities, and services that vacationing families would most likely appreciate.

In Brief
I certainly must mention that legendary pink sand castle that graces the sands of St Pete Beach--the Don Cesar. With an unparalleled history reaching back to the 1920s, this resort--in its heyday a playground for the wealthy--was in 1942 no longer able to sustain its luxurious style. After having laid quiet and empty for over 30 years, the resort was miraculously brought back with all of its former splendor and elegance. The Don Cesar now offers luxurious accommodations, unparalleled amenities, and stunning surroundings. It is said that the ghost of developer Thomas Rowe has been sighted keeping a watchful eye over his hotel, welcoming guests as they enter, or just walking along the shore with his long-lost love. (See the resorts Web site for the entire legend.)
The Highlights
-The spectacular sandcastle-like resort is located right on the oceanfront with 7 miles of sugary white sandy beach and warm gulf waters to play in (and on) -Exceptionally elegant surroundings -Luxurious accommodations with a variety of room sizes and styles to choose from -Exceptional service

Child Care and Childrens Programs
The Don Cesar Beach Resort has recently become part of the Loews family of resorts and as such now incorporates the perks that Loews is so well known for, such as Loews Loves Kids and T-Loews (T stands for teen). There is even a supervised childrens program, Camp CeSar, offering kids 5-12 an opportunity to play the day away while Mom and Dad spend some time on their own. In-room child care can be arranged as well simply contact the resort concierge (provided by an outside sitter service). The resorts atmosphere is most definitely upscale and refined, though still offers plenty for families to enjoy, most especially now that they have become part of the Loews family of resorts.
Recreational Facililities
- The Beach (with water sports available)
-2 Pools
-Fishing excursions
-18 holes of Golf (with additional courses nearby as well)
-Etiquette Classes
With facilities so extensive--2 large pools, miles of beach (with water sports galore), and an array of shops and restaurants--theres little reason to ever leave. In addition to the main resort, the Beach House Suites, sister to the Don Cesar, is right nearby, offering a home away from home for families, with spacious accommodations equipped with full kitchens, washers and dryers, and plenty of other pluses. Theres a marketplace in the lobby, or you can order groceries from the front desk to be delivered by the local grocery store. In addition, full use of the Don Cesar facilities is included.
Dining at the Don is another subject all together
in general I wouldnt feel comfortable bringing along the kids to any of the restaurants here. Each restaurant (there are 6) isexceptional in its own unique way, featuring menus filled with tasty culinary creations (though catering particularly to an adult palate), not to mention (in most cases) spectacular surroundings, none are truly child friendly (with the possible exception of the Sea Porch Café and even then I wouldnt bring along children under the age of at least 8).
As such I havent chosen to include them in the review however fear not as plenty of casual family friendly restaurants are located right near by offering families additional (and much needed) dining options.
Even though the resort offers Loews child-friendly programs and an onsite child-care program, not all of the resorts facilities are nearly as child-friendly. The dining options are (with the possible exception of the pool bar) far too upscale for the average family with young children, even those with preteens, and many will likely find the resort (and all of its facilities) much too refined if they have toddlers in tow.
Distance To
Busch Gardens and Adventure Island: 27 miles (45 minutes to an hour)
Museum of Science and Industry 28 miles (45 minutes to an hour)
Tampa International Airport: 20 Miles (about 40 minutes)
The Florida Aquarium: 18 miles (30-45 minutes)
Clearwater Beach: 15 miles (30 minutes)
Orlando Attractions: 90 miles (2-2 1/2 hours)
Overall
The Don Cesar is far more upscale (though the Beach House is slightly more informal) than most resorts I would normally recommend for families, however, it is certainly a wonderful choice for those wishing to indulge a bit (or those accustomed to a very upscale and posh lifestyle). Those with older children (of at least of school age even then preferably over 12) would fare far better than those with younger children, even with the numerous family friendly amenities. For families whose children can handle the more refined atmosphere of the resort however, the Don Cesar is well worth your consideration.

Child Care/Childrens Programs
The Fun Factory Kids Camp program allows potty-trained kids 4-12 the opportunity to play the day away while Mom and Dad get some down time to themselves. Arts and crafts, swimming, boating excursions, sightseeing excursions, movies, and more will fill their day (or evening). Lunch, including a drink, from the kids menu is included. The cost varies depending on whether you choose day or evening programs and on how many children you enroll. If parents dont have a cell phone, a beeper will be provided.
For newborns up to 3-year-olds, in-room child care is also available. There is a 4-hour minimum at a rate of $10 per hour. If you have more than one child under 3, there is an additional charge of $2 per hour for each additional child. Meals in this case are your responsibility. For additional details on either child-care option, call 577-461-3222 ext. 107.
For either option, it is highly suggested to call 2 weeks ahead to reserve space, especially for evening arrangements, as the programs can fill up quickly.
Other great family activities include the Dive-in Movies, where kids and adults alike can sit (or swim) and enjoy a family-friendly flick shown poolside. Free popcorn is served, but if you are a bit hungrier, the Sand Bar and Grill--the poolside snack bar--is open during the movies.
On Thursdays, the hotel hosts a Tiki Beach Party, with volleyball, calypso music,
limbo contests, crab races and more.
Recreational Facilities
With 2 beachside pools and the sand and surf right outside the door, you just cant go wrong. Along with making sand castles and jumping waves, the resort offers plenty of water-sport activities as well. Many of these incur separate and additional charges, but the Hilton offers a unique Beach Activities Package that will help you save a bit of change. The package can be purchased at 1-, 2-, 3-, or 5-day increments, averaging just over $20 per day. It entitles you to unlimited use of the fitness center, beach chairs and umbrella rentals (which alone would cost $25 for a full day or $15 for a half), an adult bicycle rental, and 10 percent off any water-sport rentals. It also includes unlimited use of the in-room safe, faxes incoming and outgoing, and unlimited local calls. If you choose not to purchase the package, there will be extra (and sometimes higher) charges for these activities and items. Other pluses include discounts on bike rentals, watersports rentals, and FUnFactory activities for the kids. Youll also save between 10% and 25 % off resort dining. Chnages have been made to the program over the years so be sure to check the list of activities and services that are included in the Beach Package when signing up.
There are tub rides, boogie boards, parasailing, and wave runners for the adventurous members of the family. Me? Ill stick to building sand castles with the kids, searching for shells, and just sinking my feet into the sand.
Dining
Reflections Restaurant serves breakfast (buffet), lunch, and dinner (with buffets available on certain nights, usually Fridays and Saturdays) in a casual waterfront atmosphere.
Sand Bar & Grill, offering beachfront dining, serves lighter fare, with snacks and sandwiches on the menu. Theyre open from 11:00 a.m. till sunset, but on nights that Drive-in Movies are shown (usually Tuesday nights, with show times dependent on sunset), they stay open late.
The Tiki Bar offers snacks and drinks on the beach in an open air tiki hut with a floor of sugary sand.
Coasters Lounge features a sports-bar atmosphere and is just the place to have a snack and a drink while you catch the big game. Both Coasters Lounge and the Tiki Bar have a more adult atmosphere in the evening.
Theres a coffee shop as well, located on the lower level street side. Just right for a quick pick me up.
Overall
Surrounded by warm Gulf waters and white sandy beach, the views are spectacular. The rooms are filled with the comforts of home, and the resort offers activities for everyone in the family. You only have to go as far as the lobby or pool for some great casual dining, though there are plenty of great waterfront eateries within just a minutes walk.

There are plenty of activities to keep kids busy throughout the day both indoor and out.
Pre-registration is required as space is limited. Extra charges apply.
The Tradewinds Action Zone, or TAZ, is a group of staffers ready to amuse and entertain guests poolside with plenty of activities for everyone. Bingo, volleyball, and even sandsculpting contests are just some of the activities that go on. Events and activities change daily.
Swimming lessons are also available for the kids. Lessons are provided by certified Red Cross instructors. Pre-registration is required, and multiple lessons can be arranged.
Lessons are at an additional fee.
There is also an array of individually scheduled activities including tennis clinics, mini golf, arts and crafts, and poolside family feud. Crab races, name that tune, and Dive-In movies are favorites as well. RedBeards Pirate Show is a resort favorite as the pirate regales guests with his tales of travel and search for treasure on the high seas (the show is presented twice weekly). Eye patches, tattoos, and face painting are all part of the fun for kids as well. The list goes on and on with over 45 family activities and 10 KONK activities for kids. The Island Grand has an array of programs for children that seems almost endless.
Recreational Facilities
-The beach, of course, is the center of activity, with an array of water-sport rentals as well as cabanas, chairs, and umbrellas.

Dining
Bermudas offers a casual atmosphere with waterfront views appropriate for family dining. A breakfast buffet and à la carte menu of morning favorites is available in the early hours while dinner options include steak and seafood with a childrens menu available.
The Flying Bridge, a very casual Cracker cottage, can be found straddling the waterways of the Island Grand, with paddleboats floating by underneath. Its open for lunch and dinner, and you will find a variety of soups, sandwiches, and appetizers on the menu ,with a few heftier entrées added in for good measure. Though there is no childrens menu per se, there are plenty of kid-friendly choices on the main menu.
Captain RedBeards Sharktooth Tavern is very casual tavern with occasional live entertainment, including kid-friendly activities like crab racing or Buccaneer Beadmaking and even a chance to meet the pirate himself for a tall tale or two. Sandwiches and lighter fare are on the menu here, and the kids menu has plenty for hungry young pirates.
The Palm Court is the place for an evening out without kids in tow as the atmosphere and menu both cater to adults. Lunch and dinner are served, though on Sundays there is an elaborate brunch buffet that the entire family can enjoy.
B. R. Cudas, located beachfront, is a sports bar offering a casual atmosphere for those who would rather watch than play. While certainly not child-unfriendly, the sports bar atmosphere makes it more appropriate for adults later in the day. Appetizers, salads, and sandwiches round out the menu for lunch, while a few heartier meals are added in at dinner.
Pizza Hut Express-- I really dont need to explain this one, do I? All you need to know is that they are open daily from 11:00 a.m. till 9:00 p.m., and in-room delivery is available.

Overall
The resort offers everything you can imagine to make a family vacation fun, and all is right at the resort. If you must leave, its only minutes to all of the area attractions, shops, and restaurants, some even within walking distance. The beach is spectacular, and so is the resort. The pools are a constant bustle of activity, so if youre looking to relax, the beach may be your best bet.
The TradeWinds Sandpiper is located just 2 resorts over (one resort stands between the Island Grand and the Sandpiper), and it too features an array of suites to choose from. Guests of the Sandpiper have privileges at the Island Grand, allowing them use of the recreational facilities as well as the dining facilities. The Island Grand guests also may use the facilities at the Sandpiper (where you will find a few additional eateries and recreational offerings). Though run separately, they are sister properties. In Brief
Overlooking the sparkling waters of both Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, this resort is situated along a private stretch of white sandy beach on the island of Sand Key. With Sand Key Park and Preserve just next door and an array of shops, attractions, and restaurants only minutes away, the location is hard to beat. This Mediterranean-style resort offers extensive recreational facilities, well-appointed and beautifully decorated rooms, as well as an assortment of on-site dining and shopping.
The resort isnt so overwhelmingly large that getting around is much of a problem, but you will most certainly get your exercise making your way to the warm Gulf waters with such a wonderfully large stretch of beach before you. The Mediterranean-inspired architecture in the public areas throughout the resort is most predominant in the pool area, with ornate columns and similarly ornate architectural accents surrounding the pool. Though the resort is most certainly upscale, the atmosphere remains casual and friendly.
The Highlights
-1000-foot-wide private white sandy beach on the Gulf of Mexico
-Kids Camp (summers only)
-Extensive recreational facilities
-Suites available
-Proximity to area parks, attractions, restaurants, and shops
-Quiet location on Sand Key
In-Room Amenities
With a total of 390 rooms, 375 are fairly standard fare, offering either a king or 2 queen beds, dresser, TV, and either a small table and chairs or a work desk. They are not particularly large, but they are particularly well suited for an average-size family. If you find you need a bit more space than a standard room offers but dont think a suite is quite right either, adjoining standard rooms are available as well. Many times hotels and resorts will offer the second room at a discounted rate (as long as it is booked together and you have explained the situation). Always check ahead of time to find out if a discount is available as it often can depend on room availability or even on the season during which you are traveling.
The suites, on the other hand, provide ample space for spreading out. While still only a single room, space allows for a cozy sitting area that includes pullout sofa, comfortable lounging chairs, coffee table, and entertainment armoire. A small dining table and chairs are provided, along with a kitchenette area with a refrigerator and microwave. The only drawback I find here is the lack of privacy; otherwise the rooms are rather nicely arranged.
The standard rooms include: High-speed Internet (fee), coffeemaker, video games, TV, balcony or patio, iron/board, safe, hair dryer, microwave (suites), roomy sitting area (suites), dual-line cordless phone, data port, voice mail, and a private patio or balcony. Rollaways and cribs are available upon request.

Recreational Facilities
With 10 acres of sugary white sandy beach right at your doorstep there is more than ample space to run around, play in the sand and surf, or just plain relax. Cabanas and beach chairs are available for rent, as are beach toys, boogie boards, and snorkeling sets.
For those a bit more adventurous, wave runners and Hobie Cats are available as well. You can even try your hand at parasailing, which allows for some fabulous views of the islands and sparkling blue waters below.
Its hard to beat the powdery white sands and warm Gulf coast waters, but the beachside pool comes in a close second. There is lots of space to spread out and relax on the surrounding sundeck. You can soak up the sun while the kids splash about the pool (with a childrens pool just nearby) or play on the small playground also located close by.
Towering palms and tropical plants line the sundeck, creating a tropical oasis against the backdrop of the white sandy beach.
The tennis complex includes 3 lighted courts (located beachside); clinics and instructions are offered as well.
For those who prefer a more straightforward workout, the state-of-the-art Suncoast Fitness Center is located on the top floor. Also included is a sauna, with massage treatments available. Extra charges apply for use of the fitness center and for massages.
Recreational Facilities Include:
-Large private beach area with cabana rental available
-Outdoor heated pools with outdoor childrens pools, large sundecks, and whirlpools
-Game room
-Beach volleyball
-Boat rentals

Child Care/Childrens Programs
The Sheraton Sand Key offers a unique Kids Camp for children from 5 to 12. Counselors and kids alike are on the go throughout the day, taking part in a variety of activities both indoor and out. Scouring the beach for shells, playing on the playground, or making Mom and Dad a handmade souvenir in arts and crafts are just a few examples of the planned activities. The cost is approximately $18 per day (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.) per child and includes lunch and a camp t-shirt as well. The program is only offered during the summer months.
Dining
The Island Grill is a small casual eatery with colorful tiles that accent the floor and walls and plenty of windows for letting in the Florida sunshine and vistas. Salads, pizza, soup, and sandwiches are among the choices on the lunch menu, while seafood, steaks, and home-style meals are among the dinner offerings. Open 11 a.m.-11 p.m.
Try The Poolside Cafe if you just cant pull yourself away from the pool. This is just the ticket for a light lunch, with a menu that includes pizza, sandwiches, hot dogs, ice cream and more. Open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The MainStay Tavern, with its sports bar theme, complete with pool tables and a largescreen plasma TV, offers a casual atmosphere. They serve sandwiches, burgers, and appetizers all day and a full dinner menu after 6 p.m., but families would fare better during the lunch hours as the bar and the occasional live entertainment offered bring in a more adult crowd in the evenings. Open noon to 11 p.m.
Rustys Bistro Gourmet, named one of Tampa Bays top 30 restaurants by the St. Petersburg Times, does not offer what I would call family-friendly dining. It would be a particularly good choice for an evening out without the kids, offering a romantic atmosphere and fabulous Floribbean fare. It is the only restaurant at the resort thats open for breakfast, so bring along the kids in the morning. A full breakfast buffet is available from 7 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. (Sundays until noon). Breakfast pizzas, omelets, crepes, and breakfast sandwiches are just a few of the offerings.
Shopping
Blue Waters Provisions offers a small selection of convenience foods, sandwiches, snacks, and even
Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Drinks, including wine and liquor, are available as well. Youll also find just about everything you need to hit the beach or head to the pool, including sunscreen, magazines, and even inflatable rafts. Open 24 hours.
Sea Grapes provides a small selection of resort wear and unique trinkets.

In Brief:
Located on 15 acres alongside the Intercoastal Waterway, this Holiday Inn is unlike any other you've ever experienced. While not too far off the beaten part (only 7 miles from Clearwater Beach), but just enough to be ever so slightly secluded, this resort offers plenty for families. Large comfortable suites, an amazingly kid-friendly pool area, and a location that is only minutes from the area beaches and attractions, not to mention the spectacular views from studios to 2-level suites, combine to make this a good choice for families looking for something just a bit different from the usual beachfront resort.
The Highlights
-100,000 gallon free-form waterfall pool with plenty for kids
-Large suites and adjoining rooms
-An array of water sports and boat rentals
-The beach is nearby alongside a 50-slip marina
-Kids-eat-free program.
In-Room Amenities
There is definitely a room to fit your family here. The 164 rooms (including 87 suites) offer unique features, from the vaulted ceiling in the Islander Rooms, to the 1,200-squarefoot, 2-story villa that provides all the comforts of home. Each offers plenty of room to spread out, relax, and get comfortable. One feature in particular that most other properties just cannot match is the ability to book a suite and connecting studio, a huge advantage for larger families and families who are traveling together. If you have ever traveled with another family and tried to get rooms remotely close together, you will understand just how valuable this is.
Even the studios have kitchenettes, allowing you to fix a quick breakfast in the room or stock up for those late-night snacks. Its the full kitchens in the 2-story villas, though, that can be a real plus when youre traveling with kids. Separate living areas allow for plenty of personal space and quiet areas for smaller kids who need to nap.
Studios all have a courtyard view and can be reserved with an adjoining suite to sleep up to 10 people. They include1 king or 2 queen beds.
Suites include: fully equipped kitchen, including dishwasher, stove, full-size refrigerator, dishes and silverware, queen sleeper sofa, data port phones with voicemail, hair dryer, iron/board, and TV.
The 1,200-square-foot Villa includes, in addition to the above: separate dining area, cathedral ceiling, dual vanity bathroom, in-room Jacuzzi, private balcony, second-level master bedroom with king bed and a walk-in closet The Condo Suites include, in addition to the above: center island in kitchen, separate bedroom with 2 queen beds, TV, queen sleeper sofa, hair dryer, large bathroom with separate dressing area, patio with a view of the Intercoastal Waterway, and the kitchenette includes a mini-fridge, microwave, 2-burner stove, toaster, and coffeemaker.

Recreational Facilities
I have to say the large landscaped pool area--with waterfalls, a waterslide, water umbrellas, and more--is by far one of the best around! The pirate ship play area and water umbrellas will keep the kids splashing around for hours. If you would prefer to be on the water instead of in it, the marina is the place to go. Arrangements can be made for fishing and sightseeing excursions as well as a variety of water sports from jet skiing to water skiing. Adding to the waterfront ambience is a rather large shark, hanging by hook as if he were the catch of the day. He makes for a great souvenir photo. If youre heading to any of the area beaches the Indian Rocks Beach is roughly 100 yards from the resort, Clearwater Beach a 10 minute drive away, and St Petes Beach a bit further south and about a 20 minute drive away or just hop on the Pinellas Trolley itll take you all the way to St. Petersburg if you like.
-Large free-form pool area, with waterfalls and a childrens water play area
-Water sports, including wind surfing, water skiing, and jet skiing
-Boat rentals and charters for fishing and sightseeing are available.
-Tennis courts, fitness center, volleyball
Dining
Jimmy Guana serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with seafood the specialty, though there are plenty of other choices, including pasta, chicken, and burgers. The hand-painted tables, waterfront location, and tropical decor create an island-casual atmosphere everyone in the family can enjoy.
Shopping
There is a small gift shop filled with sundries and supplies. If your needs are more substantial, prices will be more competitive and selections greater at the area grocers and pharmacies.
Distance To
Busch Gardens: 25 miles (about 1 hour)
Beaches: 1/4 mile (directly on trolley line)
Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary: 3 miles (ten minutes)
Florida Botanical Gardens: 3 miles (ten minutes)
Pioneer Village: 3 miles (ten minutes)
Florida Aquarium: 24 miles (about 45 minutes)
Orlando Attractions: 85 miles (1 1/2-2 hours)
Tampa International Airport: 18 Miles (about 45 minutes)
A taxi to St. Pete Beach or Clearwater Beach runs about $20 if the trolley isnt an option that would work for you.
Overall
This resort offers families the opportunity to experience the Gulf from a slightly different perspective than most other resorts in the area as its location (on the intercoastal waterway, not directly on the beach) allows for great views of the marina and all of the boating activity. And even though its not located directly on the beach, its only a short walk (or trolley ride) away to the white sugary sands and warm Gulf waters (though you may have a tough time getting the kids out of the pirate pool and play area to get there).
The variety of rooms ensures families of all sizes will find a comfortable place to rest and relax, and many are filled with the helpful home-away-from-home amenities families with kids will definitely appreciate.
